Why Rest Feels Difficult for Some People

When Stillness Feels Wrong
Many adults find that rest does not come easily, even when time and opportunity are available. The schedule clears, the obligations pause, and instead of relief, something inside resists. For many professionals, constant productivity has become the baseline. Being busy, staying on top of things, and always anticipating what comes next can begin to feel normal, even necessary. Over time, the nervous system adapts to that pace, and quiet no longer feels like relief. It can feel restless, guilty, anxious, or like something is being left undone.
This experience is common, and it does not reflect a flaw in character. It reflects a nervous system that has adapted to a pace it now treats as the baseline, one that has spent so long in a state of activation that stillness has become unfamiliar.
The Nervous System Learns What It Practises
The autonomic nervous system operates through two primary branches. The sympathetic branch governs activation, preparing the body for action. The parasympathetic branch governs rest, digestion, and recovery. In a healthy system, these branches shift fluidly depending on circumstance. Under chronic stress, that fluidity is lost. The system becomes anchored closer to activation, even in the absence of any immediate demand (Goldstein, 2023).
This is not a conscious choice. The body has learned, often over years, that staying alert is necessary. Research demonstrates that chronic stress produces measurable physiological consequences, including dysregulation of the hypothalamic pituitary adrenal axis and sustained alterations in autonomic nervous system functioning that persist even during periods of apparent calm (Yaribeygi et al., 2017). The body continues responding to a threat that may no longer be present.
Why Quiet Can Feel Unsafe
Dr. Stephen Porges' polyvagal theory offers a precise framework for understanding why stillness can feel uncomfortable rather than restorative. According to this theory, the nervous system is constantly engaged in neuroception, an automatic and unconscious process of scanning the environment for cues of safety or danger (Porges, 2022). When a person has spent a long period in a state of vigilance, the absence of activity does not automatically register as safety. It can instead register as unfamiliar, and unfamiliar states are often interpreted by the nervous system as a potential threat.
This explains a pattern many people recognize but rarely name. The guilt that surfaces when sitting still. The restlessness that appears the moment a task list is finished. The impulse to find something, anything, to occupy the mind. These are not failures of discipline. They are a nervous system attempting to return to the only state it has practised for years.
Rest as a Skill, Not a Given
One of the most important reframes in this work is understanding rest as something that must be learned rather than something that simply happens when the conditions allow it. A person whose nervous system has spent years in sympathetic dominance cannot simply decide to relax and have the body follow. The system requires evidence, gathered over time, that stillness is genuinely safe before it will allow itself to settle.
This is why so many well-intentioned strategies fail. A person books a vacation, arrives, and spends the first several days unable to switch off. By the time the system begins to settle, the time away is ending. This is not evidence of an inability to relax. It is evidence that the system needed more time than the schedule allowed.
How Therapy Supports This Process
In my practice, I work with clients to gradually rebuild their relationship with rest, using approaches that address both the body and the underlying patterns that drive constant activation.
Somatic therapy is central to this work. Because the nervous system holds the imprint of chronic activation in the body itself, cognitive strategies alone are often insufficient. Somatic approaches work directly with breath, posture, and bodily sensation, creating small, repeatable experiences of safety that the nervous system can begin to register and trust. Research on somatic experiencing, a leading body-oriented approach, documents significant improvements in trauma-related symptoms and physiological regulation through this form of work (Kuhfuss et al., 2021).
Internal Family Systems complements this work by addressing the parts of a person that resist rest. Often, a protective part has learned that constant productivity keeps something difficult at bay, whether that is anxiety, self-criticism, or a long-held belief connecting worth to output. Rather than overriding this part, IFS works to understand what it is protecting against and what it would need in order to soften its grip (Schwartz and Sweezy, 2020).
Compassionate Inquiry adds another dimension by exploring the origins of this pattern with curiosity rather than judgment. Many adults who struggle to rest learned early that stillness was associated with criticism, neglect, or unpredictability. Understanding where this pattern began allows it to be approached with compassion rather than added to a list of things requiring correction.
A Gradual Return
The capacity to rest does not return all at once. It often begins with small moments: a breath that lands a little deeper, a quiet morning that feels slightly less uncomfortable than the one before, a pause that does not immediately trigger the urge to fill it. These moments accumulate. Over time, the nervous system begins to learn that stillness can be safe, and rest becomes less an act of willpower and more a genuine return home.
